How to Care for Your Bouquet During a Heatwave: Tips to Keep Flowers Fresh and Beautiful

 

A beautiful bouquet can brighten any space, but during a heatwave, maintaining its freshness becomes a challenge. High temperatures can cause flowers to wilt, fade quickly, or even die if not cared for properly. Don't worry—here are some expert tips to help you preserve your bouquet's beauty during those hot days.

1. Keep Your Flowers Cool and Out of Direct Sunlight

Place your bouquet in a cool, shaded area away from direct sunlight, heaters, or appliances that emit heat.

This prevents the flowers from overheating and wilting prematurely. It is also a good idea to keep flowers away from Air conditioning units, as this can dry out the blooms. 

Remove all packaging from around the design to allow air flow through the arrangement.

2. Change the Water Frequently

Heat causes bacteria to grow faster in the water, which can clog the stems and block water absorption.

Change the water in the vase every day if possible, and always use clean, lukewarm water, making sure all the stems are submerged. 

Clean the vase each time you change the water to prevent bacteria build up.

Add flower food to the water to encourage the flowers to flourish.

3. Caring For Your Flowers

Trim about an inch off the stems each time you change the water to improve absorption. Cut stems at a 45º angle.

Make sure there is no foliage below the water line and remove any fallen leaves/petals from the water, as this cause bacteria to grow.

Flowers bloom and flourish at different rates, as a stem fades, remove it from the design and continue enjoying the rest of the arrangement.

Despite your best efforts, some flowers may not survive the heatwave. Trust your senses—if the petals are wilting, turning brown, or the stems are soft, it’s time to enjoy the beauty while it lasts and then compost the flowers.
